Police officers received two separate complaints from the owners of vehicles entered at Irwin Park in New Canaan while they were in the park walking between 4:15 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24.
One vehicle was left unlocked with a purse inside, which was stolen, New Canaan Police said.
The purse had an estimated value of $500, and there was an unsigned bank check for $400 inside, along with a passport and notebook filled with passwords to various accounts.
According to police, the second vehicle had its rear passenger window smashed in at approximately 5 p.m. on Saturday.
The owner reported damage was done to the bottom corner of the window, and multiple purses were stolen from inside the vehicle.
The bags had an estimated value of $2,000, police said, and there was a black wallet inside worth approximately $500. Inside there was $50 cash, credit cards, and a debit card.
“In past crimes, theft gangs have targeted parks in our town,” police said in an alert issued on Monday, Oct. 26. “Park visitors should not leave valuables in their vehicles.
“Secure valuables … never leave valuables in your vehicle. Often, identity theft occurs when the drivers’ licenses and credit cards are stolen.”
